Stanley Taxis was founded in 1961 by Robert McGill Scott, (who
along with his wife Ann, and their sons, Andrew & Ian, still own
Stanley Travel) when he operated 2 taxis from a wooden 'hut' located in
Stanley, where the Louisa Centre now stands.
Since those early days things have come on a long way, we now operate a
fleet of over 60 vehicles with around 100 employees, making us the
largest taxi operator and a major employer in Derwentside.
Over the years we grew to become much more than just another taxi
company, following the introduction of several 12 and 16 seat mini
coaches, "Stanley Taxis & Mini Coaches" was born.
From this steady start, we continued to grow and before long we were
operating 24 seat coaches as well. In 1988, we took a major step
forward, when we were awarded our first Bus Service contracts by Durham
County Council. This was the beginning of a whole new line of business,
and the bus services began operating under the name Stanley Buses.
As time continued to pass, we expanded our coach fleet further, and
added 33, 53 and 57 seat coaches to our fleet, as well as a 51 seat
wheelchair access coach (one of only a handfull in the area)
Of course, this meant the name Stanley Taxis & Mini Coaches was no
longer suitable, so the company became three separate brands, Stanley
Taxis, Stanley Coaches and Stanley Buses.
In 2007, the bus services were performing well, and we had built up a
strong network of local services, but we had reached a stage where
substantial investment was required to move this area of the business to
the next level. The decision was taken, following discussions with Go
North East, to sell Stanley Buses to Go North East. The take over was
completed in October 2007, and Stanley Buses became Venture Buses.
This lead to an exciting new era for Stanley Taxis & Coaches. We
were now in a postition to fully concentrate on our taxi and coach
business, and this allowed us to develop our Holiday and Day Trip
programmes. Also, following the sale of the service buses, we discovered
we were in a position to take in outside work for our Department for
Transport standard workshop, so Stanley Fleetserv was started.
Now was the time to re-brand Stanley Taxis & Coaches as we felt the
company was in need of an updated image, 'Stanley Travel' was born! We
still operate taxis as Stanley Taxis, and coaches as Stanley Coaches,
but we all operate under the parent banner of Stanley Travel.
When you deal with Stanley Travel, you are working in partnership with a
team of experts. Because we provide high class & high quality
vehicles, you can be sure that taxis, wheelchair accessible vehicles,
mini coaches or full size executive coaches will more than match the
standards provided by our big name, high priced competitors. In an
industry plagued by 'cowboys' we're justifiably proud of the quality of
service and value for money we provide. But, most important of all to
us, is that personal touch we try to offer our customers, 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year.
